Easter Sunday in Rotterdam

Vihdoin niitä Rotterdam kuvia! Kuten aikaisemmin kerroinkin, pääsiäissunnuntaina kävin Rotterdamissa tapaamassa pitkästä aikaa vanhaa vaihtarituttua. Kierreltiin Thomaksen kanssa pyörillä ympäri Rotterdamia päivän verran ja oli kyllä tosi kivaa; ensinnäkin vaihtaa pitkästä aikaa kuulumisia, mutta myös tutustua kyseiseen kaupunkiin ensimmäistä kertaa.

Olen aina pitänyt Rotterdamia jotenkin todella harmaana kaupunkina perustuen siihen mitä olen kuullut, mutta tuon reissun jälkeen kyllä mielipide muuttui ihan todella. Onhan Rotterdam verrattuna moneen muuhun Hollannin kaupunkiin todella moderni ja teollistunut, mutta siellä on myös todella paljon muutakin, kunhan vain eksyy oikeisiin paikkoihin. Siellä on mm. järvi ihan lähellä keskustaa. Siis järvi!! En ole koskaan fiilistellyt liikaa meressä uimista, mutta voi kuinka kaipaankaan Lahti-lapsuudestani järviä... Siksi siis isot pisteet tuolle.

Turistina en olisi varmasti nähnyt kaupunkia samasta näkökulmasta, joten oli kyllä kiva kierrellä paikkoja tällä tavoin. Isot kiitokset siitä siis henkilökohtaiselle oppaalle :)

Finally the Rotterdam pics! As I told earlier (not in English though but anyway) I visited my old "esn-friend" in Rotterdam during the Easter holidays. Thomas arranged me a very nice city tour and we biked around Rotterdam the whole day. It was great! Firstly, it was awesome to catch up with an old friend after so many years, and secondly, it was so nice get to know this city a bit for the first time!

To be honest, as much as I hate people with negative prejudices, this time I definitely had some regarding to this city. I expected it to be, of course, very big, but also too grey and industrial for my taste. Well, now I can state that I was wrong. Of course as a city Rotterdam is very different and modern compared to many other cities in Holland, but if you look closely enough, Rotterdam actually can offer much more than that. It's not only about modern buildings, it's much greener than expected. They even have a little lake there! A lake!!! Since I come from "a land of a thousand lakes", you might understand why I really appreciate it!

Anyhow... A tourist sees what s/he has come to see. I saw a lot more, and thanks go to my excellent guide Thomas :)

Biking to "De Kop van Zuid" neighbourhood in Rotterdam. The new building in the picture is called "De Rotterdam" and it's designed by Rem Koolhaas. Very interesting design I would say. But whatever your opinion is about it, it's better to stay positive since the locals are very proud of it I heard :P

Biking in the park called "Kralingse plas". If I just had a dog (and lived in Rotterdam), this would be the place to walk with it... Vili would've loved it :)

And the lake... If I ever move to Rotterdam, I definitely want a house (or apartment whatever) nearby this park lake.

Olen jo pitkään miettinyt, että jos koskaan päätän jäädä Hollantiin pysyvästi, muutan ehdottomasti isompaan kaupunkiin (Breda nyt on vaan liian pieni). Jostain syystä olen aina mieltänyt sen olevan Amsterdam, ehkä mahdollisesti myös Utrecht, mutta Rotterdam ei ole koskaan ollut listalla. Paitsi nyt. Enää en näe sitä lainkaan hullumpana vaihtoehtona... :)

I have always thought that if I ever decide to stay in Holland for good, I will definitely move to a bigger city (Breda is just a way too small for me). Somehow I've always envisioned this city to be Amsterdam, or maybe even Utrecht, but never Rotterdam. However, at this very moment I don't see this option bad at all...  :)
